Over the years I have learned to make a collection of outfits
to keep for myself - while I love to wear
the amazing outfits by mentor
textile artists like
Joyce Mahima Little, Tseshaht Nation
and
Denise Williams, Tla-o-quiaht Nation
who has a formal design label
House of Winchee
people would always ask me
if I made what I was wearing.
if I made what I was wearing.
This re-cultured dress is my design and the
recognizable U-shapes--whale tales--
are customarily red, black and white--
common colours of choice for most West Coast Artists.
However, I made this dress living in Toronto
in the middle of winter!
in the middle of winter!
I used turquoise and silver to represent the cold winter weather
and accented design with an outline
of white thread
of white thread
to represent snow
that is all too common
that is all too common
in the Central Canada region I have been living
for nearly 5-years.
